Gauhati University began in the year 1948 under the Act of Guwahati University 1947.
This university is the foremost educational institution of North East India that has been accredited with a rating of 4 star by the NAAC or UGC, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
The University Grants Commission funds the Government of Assam for research as well as other academic activities.
Educational Streams
Gauhati University provides courses in under-graduate and post-graduate levels in Science, Humanities and Social Science, Engineering, Medicine, Management and Commerce within its campus and to all the affiliated colleges that is spread over the state.
This university is involved seriously in path breaking research in all the areas, in spite of having infrastructure constrains.
History
This university was established in the year1948 and for a long time, no other universities emerged in the complete eastern region, besides Calcutta. It catered to the requirements of the students coming from Bihar, Bengal, Orissa and Assam.
However, in order to satisfy the needs of increasing number of students this university was incorporated. It started as a teaching and affiliating as well as residential university in some temporary buildings in Gauhati.
Initially, this university had 17 affiliated colleges as well as 8 Post Graduate Departments and today it has grown into significant numbers, besides one satellite campus located at Kokrajhar and a correspondence school for Post Graduate as well as a constituent Law College.
Facilities
The university facilitates in taking care of all the basic needs and the welfare scheme takes charge of the Guest House sited at university campus east end. There is an Auditorium, Lecture Halls, Health Centre, University Press, State Bank of India Branch with ATM facility for all 24 hours and a Post Office located with in the campus.
Basketball Court, Football Ground, Children Park and Outdoor Stadium are also inside the campus in the aim of encouraging leisure activities. There is a Placement Cell extending warm invitation to carry out Recruitment Drive for the PG students in the campus. |
