B R Ambedkar Bihar University was established in 1952 as a university for the state.
This university is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities and has acquired recognition by UGC, the University Grant Commission, the Government of India.

History
Bihar University was isolated in 1952 from Patna University. In 1960, it was separated as Ranchi University, Ranchi; Bihar University, Muzaffarpur; and Bhagalpur University, Bhagalpur.
The year 1961, again saw a bifurcation into the Bihar University, and this time it was Muzaffarpur as well as Magadh University, Bodh Gaya. This was yet again in 1973 segregated into Muzaffarpur University, Bihar University, and Mithila University, Darbhanga.
This was later bifurcated in 1990 into Muzaffarpur, Bihar University and JP University, Chapra. Eventually, it acquired the name in 1992 as Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University.

B R Ambedkar Bihar University provides numerous full-time as well as part-time courses extending to undergraduate to postgraduate as well as research levels. Apart from the contemporary courses, there are vocational courses offered by this university.
However, the professional courses held by this university include Business Administration, Computer Application, Industrial Microbiology, Industrial Chemistry, Library Sciences, Industrial Fish and Fisheries, Journalism and Mass Communication, Clinical Psychology and Yogic Studies.
The Distance Education department conducts courses through correspondence for those students who have no choice to attend routine classes or acquire regular higher education.
