National Dairy Research Institute is sited in Karnal in the Haryana stat, India.
This is a deemed university and offers development and research facilities to support as well as promote programs in dairy development in India.
This institute offers and designs courses and programs for graduate, post graduate and doctoral levels in dairy technology as well as other allied disciplines.
They provide specialized training programs in short-term course as well as vocational courses.
History
National Dairy Research Institute was the one-time Institute for Animal Husbandry and Dairying. It was renamed in 1936 to be the Imperial Dairy Institute.
The base was shifted in 1955 to Karnal, and was later known to be the Central Cattle Breeding Ground. In the years 1962 as well as 1964, there was an establishment of two satellite centers in Kalyani and Bombay. In 1984 the center at Bombay was closed.
In 1970, the institute management which was under the Ministry of Agriculture earlier was shifted to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. However, this was done so that functional autonomy was ascertained.
Infrastructure
This deemed university was conferred as they conducted excellent academic and research programs. They also provided quality education in dairy technology and thereby became a premier institution in Asia.
This is spread over a vast area covering to nearly 560 hectares of land, where in nearly 360 hectares land is employed for fodder cultivation. This Institute has exceptional infrastructural facilities including research laboratories and imposing buildings well equipped with contemporary equipments as well as technological facilities.
Subjects offered
This university offered various subjects in association to dairy such as dairy cattle nutrition, dairy cattle breeding, animal biotechnology, dairy cattle physiology, dairy engineering, dairy technology, dairy chemistry, dairy microbiology, animal biochemistry, dairy extension, statistics and management and dairy economics.
The aim of this institute in collaborating with national as well as international agencies is to develop dairy research. The aim of this institute is to develop manpower in dairy technology.
In association with academic pursuits, this University also guides as well as provides advice to state and central government organizations, besides cooperative institutions that are related to the dairy industry. It offers the dairy farmers as well as businessmen also consultancy services.
