Post graduate institute of Medical education and research is also referred to as PGI. This is located in Chandigarh and is prominent as the top leading medical colleges in India.
This college initiated in 1962, owing to the hard work and sincere determination of the then Punjab chief minister, late Sardar Pratap Singh Kairon.
It became an autonomous institution by the act of parliament and was under the control of Health ministry and family welfare.
Post graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research is also abbreviated as PGIME. This institute is well equipped facilitating all modern equipments and offers education in a various disciplines at all levels of courses. PGI, Chandigarh is a member of the AIU, Association of Indian Universities.
Courses
This medical educational institute offers undergraduate courses for B.Sc and Paramedical, while the post graduate courses include MD in anesthesia, medicine, nuclear medicine, pathology, radiotherapy, forensic medicine, microbiology, and the list is endless.
Similarly, the other courses in post graduation include MS with surgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics; DM with cardiology, neurology, gastroenterology, and more.
M.Ch offers thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, urology, plastic surgery, while MDS has courses on nursing, hospital administration, and many more.
There are post M.D. certificate courses and other paramedical courses. Doctorate courses are offered in medical and non-medical disciplines.
Eligibility
- The eligibility of the candidates for undergraduate students depends on the marks secured in their higher secondary exams having subjects such as physics, chemistry, English and biology.
- Candidates opting for B.SC nursing should have completed 10 + 2 or any other recognized examination held by the Punjab University.
- Post graduate applicants for MS or MD should possess a MBBS degree or some equivalent qualification approved by the medical council of India. MDS candidates need to have bachelor’s degree in dental surgery degree.
DM candidates are eligible with MD medicine or pediatrics and DM in clinical pharmacology need to have MD pharmacology degree and for MD pediatrics degree DM in Neonatology is required. M Ch candidates are considered eligible with MS surgery degree. Doctorate applicants must possess M Ch or DM degree in the respective field.
Admission
The undergraduate admission is based on the entrance test and likewise is the post graduate exam as well.
