North Orissa University was instituted in the year1998 owing to the Orissa University Act of 1989.
This university is a reputed center for learning in this region and is included under the University Grants Commission Act 1956 that is aimed to impart higher education to the Northern Orissa area of the Tribal base area.

Students doing courses through correspondence can avail education through Study Centers. PhD Applicants are expected to have Master’s Degree in their respective subjects from a recognized University with 48% marks minimum or some equivalent grade.
