The state of Sikkim has introduced free and compulsory education for all students following the 10+2 pattern of education.
The schools in Sikkim give importance to the sarva siksha abhiyan scheme to promote education even in the remote areas.
The government schools in Sikkim outnumbered the private school and most of the schools are affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education.
The school uses English in imparting education, however regional language is used as second language.
Various steps and efforts were exerted by the government to enhance the condition of education thus reduce the drop out rate at schools in Sikkim.
Namchi Public School is one of the famous schools in Sikkim affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations. The medium of instructions is English but it is compulsory to study Tibetain, Hindi and Nepali as second languages.
Additional subjects like Economics and Commerce, Physical Education and Computer Science are offered for the students of class VIII and above. The school year is divided in three terms from February to December. Each member is responsible to look after the pod mates’ welfare. In the computer science program, concentration on typing skills, speeds and accuracies are implemented. Educational games and programs were given as reward to encourage the students. The library program is designed to enrich the reading skills and comprehension to be an effective researcher. Students were required to do and submit book report.
