University of Allahabad was instituted in 1887 on 23rd September. Initially, this University had no teaching staff, but later on in 1921, it was re-organized as a unitary teaching.
In 1955, three colleges emerged namely the university colleges, associated colleges and constituent colleges.
All these provide full degree courses and are residential college as well. This university is located at the confluence of Ganga and Jamuna rivers.
Academic departments
The degrees offered here are in several faculties in individual disciplines such as arts, commerce and science.
The arts faculty comprises of ancient history and archaeology, philosophy, political science, economics, modern history, Mass Communication, and more. Faculty of commerce includes business administration and economics.
The science faculty includes chemistry, botany, bio-chemistry, planetary sciences and the faculty of law is also the oldest department in India.

The university campus is well spread over the city and is well-maintained as well.
Hostels
University of Allahabad has many residential hostels that offer accommodation to the students until the duration of their courses. There are girls and boy’s hostel, besides Hindu Hostel, Muslim Boarding House, International House, Jain Hostel, and many more.
The colleges that are affiliated to the University of Allahabad are the Ishwar Sharan Degree College, KP Training College, Allahabad Degree College, Ewing Christian College, CMP Degree College, Rajarshi Tandon girl’s degree college, S P M Govt Degree College, and more.

The notable alumni include politicians such as Motilal Nehru, V.P.Singh, Chandra Shekhar (former prime ministers of India), Arjun Singh former Madhya Pradesh chief minister, Madanlal Khurana former Delhi chief minister, Nikhil Kumar, former Member of Parliament, and many more.
The list of alumni does not focus only the politicians, but also others in various fields such as writers namely, Kamleshwar, Mrinal Pande, Mahadevi Varma, Poets such as Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Mathematician Prabhulal Bhatnagar and Harish Chandra, and more.
