Indian statistical Institute is a distinct institution dedicated towards teaching, research and application of statistics, social and natural sciences.
This institution was founded in the year 1931 by professor P.C. Mahalanobis and acquired the status of national importance in 1959 by an Indian Parliament act.
The headquarters is in the metropolis of Kolkata and there are two more centers in Bangalore and Delhi.
Teaching activities are focused in Kolkata, Bangalore and Delhi, while the research and other related disciples in statistics is the key activity of this leading institute.
However, the other offices in other cities are engaged in consultancy and projects for quality control as well as research operations.
Campus
Indian statistical institute campus sprawls over 30 acre towards the suburb of greater Kolkata. The office and the residential complex are distanced by a public road, but to enter either of the campus one has to take the outer road.
The main buildings in this complex are the library building, the geology building, the Amrapali and the administration building. The campus also includes staff quarters, medical unit, guest house, boy’s hostel, ladies hostel, ISEC hostel and many service units within the campus.
Academic Programs
The academic programs of this institute include degree courses diploma, associate ship, and certificate, fellowship, part time and full time courses as well. This institute also offers doctorate degrees in computer science, mathematics, statistics, quantitative economics, research, and many more fields that are connected to statistics.
Other Facilities
The other facilities that is significant is the Central library of this institute that has a network extending to various other locations as well. This library is a rich library and has more than 200,000 volumes of journals and books in association with maps, reports, reprints, microfiches and microfilms.
It receives technical and scientific journals every year and the library has CD-ROM data bases. The library has a unique collection journals and books on statistics and mathematics. This institute is working to enhance the library with computer facilities. |
